Ace Hardware is a chain of hardware stores that was founded by four Chicago men, Frank Burke, Richard Hesse, Oscar Fisher and Gunnard Lindquist, in 1924. The inspiration for the name came from World War I, in which the Ace fighter pilots were known for their ability to overcome the odds and be successful in their endeavors. The chain was incorporated in 1928 as a means to allow stores to benefit from centralized purchasing. By 1949, sales had reached $10 million, and today, its nearly 4100 stores boast $3 billion in annual sales.
The majority of applicants that interview for a position with Ace Hardware report a positive interview experience. Potential employees can expect a fairly straightforward interview process consisting of a face-to-face and/or group panel interview, in which a skills test and a personality test may be given. A standard interview question might include, "How would you approach a customer that looks like he can't find what he needs?" Potential employees can apply online or in person, and phone interviews are sometimes conducted prior to the face-to-face interview.
