Giant Food Stores, LLC, is a subsidiary of Ahold, a Netherlands grocery chain. The company was founded in Carlisle, PA, in 1923 by David Javitch. Originally named the Carlisle Meat Market, the first venue was a small, two-man butcher shop. As of 2015, over 200 stores can be found in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, and the home office remains in Carlisle. Operating under the names of Giant and Martin's, the retailer has become one of the largest grocers in the region. In 2006, Giant purchased 13 former Clemens stores and one FoodSource in Philadelphia. 2010 brought the acquisition of 25 stores in Virginia from Ukrop's Super Markets, and in 2012, 15 Genuardi's stores in Philadelphia joined the Giant fold.
Most employment candidates rate the interview process with Giant to be a positive experience, or at least neutral. There is very little negative feedback. 75 percent of the applicants apply online and they overwhelming consider the interview process to be easy. Most employees were contacted and hired very quickly after the initial application submission. Many felt that the management or interviewer was laid back and agreeable. Some use words like "happy," "sweet," and "understanding," to describe the manager with whom they interviewed. There seems to be a small company type of culture here with personal attention paid to employees, despite the size of the corporation.
