J. C. Penney had its start as The Golden Rule store, founded by James Cash Penney, in partnership with Thomas Callahan and Guy Johnson, in 1902. A mere decade letter, there were 34 J.C. Penney stores throughout the Rocky Mountain States. The chain?s second location, which was opened in Kemmerer, Utah in 1904, still operates today. In 1913, all Golden Rule stores were changed to the current J. C. Penney name. Today, there are over 1100 J. C. Penney stores in all 50 states, as well as Puerto Rico.
