About Microsoft

Number of Employees: 92,000

Headquarters: One Microsoft Way in Redmond, WA 98052

Microsoft was started in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen, two childhood friends that had a passion for computer programming. After successfully developing an interpreter that would work with the Altair 8800 microcomputer that was being sold in Popular Electronics magazine, the company took off. Microsoft dominated the market with MS-DOS and then went on to perfect Microsoft Windows, its line of operating systems. Microsoft had its IPO in 1986, making three of its employees billionaires and 12,000 millionaires.

What to Expect When Interviewing

The majority of applicants that interview for a position with Microsoft report a positive interview experience. Potential employees can expect a fairly straightforward interview process consisting of a face-to-face and/or group panel interview, in which a skills test and a personality test are given. A standard interview question might include, "What makes a piece of software good in your opinion?" Potential employees can apply online or in person, and phone interviews are sometimes conducted prior to the face-to-face interview. Applicants who are offered positions can expect to submit to a background check.
