Microsoft was started in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen, two childhood friends that had a passion for computer programming. After successfully developing an interpreter that would work with the Altair 8800 microcomputer that was being sold in Popular Electronics magazine, the company took off. Microsoft dominated the market with MS-DOS and then went on to perfect Microsoft Windows, its line of operating systems. Microsoft had its IPO in 1986, making three of its employees billionaires and 12,000 millionaires.
