Ralphs is a supermarket chain that set the stage for modern grocery stores. It was the first to offer self-serve markets utilizing checkout stands, and it introduced ideas such as farm-fresh produce and bulk buying discounts. Founded as Ralphs Grocery Company in 1873, today Ralphs is the oldest supermarket chain west of the Mississippi. The largest subsidiary of Kroger, Ralphs has more than 340 stores located throughout southern California. With an eye to design and aesthetics, Ralphs hired notable architects to design its stores, one of which was named a historic cultural monument, included in the National Register of Historic Places and photographed by the legend Ansel Adams.
