Speedway is a gas station chain, owned by Marathon, which operates in the Midwestern states of Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, Wisconsin and West Virginia. Initially called Speedway 79, Marathon dropped the '79' and let the chain's name speak for itself in a time when self-service gas stations were increasing in popularity. Speedway saw quick growth thanks to the acquisition of a number of smaller gas station chains, including Gastown, Wake Up and Starvin' Marvin. Today there are nearly 1500 Speedway stores.
