Williams-Sonoma is a retailer of high-end kitchenware, linens, furniture, housewares, specialty foods, soaps and home furnishings. Other brands owned by the company include Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids, PB Teen, Pottery Barn Bed & Bath and West Elm. Founded in 1956 by Charles E. Williams, Williams-Sonoma's sole intent was to bring high-end, professional kitchenware to the US market. By 1971, the Williams-Sonoma mail order catalog offered customers nationwide a means to purchase products that were not otherwise available in the usual markets.
